The Beach: Alex Garland

It was The Beach by Alex Garland on the bookshelf this week and might I say I devoured it between yesterday and today. Yes, the book is creepy in some parts but not as thrilling as The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, another island novel. Sure, the writing style is terse and well-constructed however in some places I was not able to connect with the novel and its character on a personal level. Some of the imagery and local color of Honk-Kong portrayed is very vivid. The pace is quick and there is a lot of action, however I think I enjoyed the movie better. And yeah, the cover gave me goosebumps.

“After discovering a seemingly Edenic paradise on an island in a Thai national park, Richard soon finds that since civilized behavior tends to dissolve without external restraints, the utopia is hard to maintain.”
